Sunflowers are the happiest plants! Yet … they also may seem complex at first glance. The petals appear endless, the flower heads point in different directions, and the leaves and stems create a maze of shapes.
But what if creating a striking sunflower painting could be broken down into a series of simple, manageable steps? And what if you were guided on developing a composition through the use of reference images that is both balanced and truly yours?

This painting turotial guides you through my layered acrylic method from start to finish.
We'll begin with a loose sketch, build a strong foundation of color, and gradually develop the painting through multiple layers until your sunflowers glow with light, texture, and personality.

Sunflowers is a LEVEL 2 painting course.
Anastasia Mak Level 2 courses are a great fit for artists who have completed some paintings and are ready for a bit more challenge. These projects often include more detailed sketches, possible additional layers, and increased attention to shapes, values, and brushwork. This lesson series is suitable for adventurous beginners as well as intermediate painters looking to strengthen their skills.
Acrylic paint, canvas, brushes, a sketching tool, and an optional acrylic paint medium. (also there are miscellaneous items such as water cup, paper towels, etc). You’ll get a simple supplies guide plus reference images as soon as you join. We use ten core colors (or eleven if you prefer two whites), all from my standard Supplies Master list. (If you’ve taken Magnetic Color, you already own the colors you'll need.)
In this lesson, I work on a 12"x16" canvas. (or approximately 30.5x40.5 cm). You are also welcome to use a slightly larger or smaller canvas for your painting, such as 11"x14", 14"x18", etc.
Nope! While I demonstrate the painting on a vertical rectangular canvas, you are welcome to adapt the composition to any canvas format you prefer. In fact, the course begins by teaching you how to sketch and build the composition yourself, giving you the flexibility to adjust the arrangement to fit your chosen canvas. If you'd rather follow my exact layout, a line drawing of the original composition is also included in the reference folder.
This course is fully pre-recorded and broken into three focused video lessons. You can watch at your own pace and revisit any section as many times as you’d like.
